They needed to move into a 3d environment because developing in 2d and building prototypes was becoming expensive and frustrating to their customers who were already using 3d systems. They wanted to find an affordable way of moving to 3d without losing any legacy data.

SolidWorks has allowed Hepco Slide Systems to move in an affordable way to 3d. This has given them massive cost savings by not having to build prototypes for every modification. They are now able to develop changes on screen and can now visualise better. Because most of their customers already use 3d SolidWorks has allowed them to speed up the time it takes to transfer images and data.
