Pro/ENGINEER® Swap Outs

Spread the word! Migrate from Pro/ENGINEER® to SolidWorks®

NT CADCAM, the leading UK reseller for SolidWorks, in conjunction with Steve Prentice Design (SPD), has enabled innovative racing company Radical Sportscars to develop its latest state-of-the-art racing engine. The 2.6 litre, V8 engine producing almost 400 BHP is based upon combining 2 Suzuki motorcycle engines, and is acknowledged to be a technological milestone in engine development. Successfully launched at the Autosport show on January 13th, Radical Sportscars already has over 18 orders.

Steve Prentice of SPD is the designer behind the Radical V8 and has worked with both SolidWorks and NT CADCAM since their introduction into the UK in 1997. He explains the significance of both in bringing the Radical V8 to life, and how this interacts with other key factors. “Radical has years of experience of working with Suzuki motorcycle engines and a constant source of supply. They also have access to the required levels of professional expertise and funding required to develop an engine of this nature as an affordable Clubmans race engine comparable on performance with exotic and expensive Formula engines. The engine was essentially a niche waiting to happen.”

He continues, “It is in this context that the role of NT CADCAM and SolidWorks can be best understood. The engine simply couldn’t have been designed in the time frame it was without SolidWorks. We would have expected to have gone through a secondary design stage to compensate for components that would have required further refinement or complete redesign. The sheer range of functionality that SolidWorks provides was instrumental in SPD choosing it when it first came to the UK in 1997. It was and remains simply in a different league to the competition. In fact, on the Radical project, SolidWorks has proved more capable than a full seat of Pro-Engineer by delivering functionality that Pro-Engineer couldn’t match, and at a price that is totally affordable. The support and assistance from the NT CADCAM team has been first class.”

In fact, the value of NT CADCAM and SolidWorks has proved itself so much to Radical Motorsport that Radical have now invested in their own system from NT CADCAM, which is already delivering significant benefits.

SolidWorks 2010 Capabilities

Bob Clements, NT CADCAM’s Marketing Director is delighted at the success of the project. “Since originally meeting Steve Prentice in 97, it was obvious that he was not only an incredibly talented engine designer, but also really understood how to get the most from 3D CAD software. The fact that SPD has delivered such a successful design project to Radical in such a condensed time-frame, simply re-enforces the strength of partnership between NT CADCAM and SolidWorks.”

NT CADCAM have been Glenair UK Ltd’s VAR for 4 years now, throughout that period they have helped us expand from a small, largely standalone system to one of the largest integrated installations in this region, and certainly the largest of its type in our industry sector.

During that period NTCADCAM have successfully fought off several competitive bids from their industry peers, and as costs were largely comparative, their value added contribution was a significant factor on every occasion.

This should be coupled with the fact that one of Glenair UK Ltd’s unique features is the level of integrated engineering support we can offer our customers; as such we actively maintain seats of AutoCAD and Pro/E (as well as several electronic and cabling packages). SolidWorks (via NTCADCAM) has therefore got direct internal competition. It is a testament to NT CADCAM’s support that SolidWorks has emerged as Glenair UK Ltd’s primary CAD and drawing / engineering data management system.

We had been a Pro/ENGINEER customer for many years, however costs…

Perry Slingsby Systems Ltd is a brand known for its excellence in designing and engineering solutions for remote intervention needs across the world in industries such as Oil and Gas and Defense. The product range includes trench and submarine cable plows and submarine rescue systems.

Experience and engineering capability are crucial to Perry Slingsby Systems Ltd’s continued success; so the company has always utilised the best tools available for its skilled workforce, including 3D computer aided design software.

Andy Dixon, Drafting Supervisor for Perry Slingsby Systems Ltd, says, “Whilst we had been using Pro/ENGINEER for many years the maintenance cost for the system had become very expensive, so much so that we could not justify moving to the current release and were falling behind in terms of the latest software and its advantages.”

In addition, the design team were having problems with interlinks and document issue control for their large assemblies; and this, combined with the unresolved high maintenance cost problems, led to a decision to reinvestigate the 3D design software market.

Perry Slingsby Systems Ltd reviewed the latest offering from Pro/ENGINEER, alongside competitors, Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks. Andy comments, “All the companies could offer the functionality we required. In summary, Pro/ENGINEER continued to work out to be expensive, with many features we required being considered as add-ons, attracting a purchase and maintenance premium each time; whilst Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks both offered excellent value. What won it for SolidWorks was that it offered a lot as standard in the box; the performance of features like e-Drawing was exemplary; and the ease of use of SolidWorks.”

NT CADCAM Ltd has been responsible for the supply, training and support for SolidWorks. Andy says, “NT CADCAM Ltd provided an excellent demonstration of SolidWorks. They have a unique time-served team, with depth and knowledge of both the software and engineering skills; hence we confidently placed our SolidWorks order with them.”

Andy adds, “NT CADCAM Ltd’s UK-based helpdesk is easy to communicate with, their technicians are clued up and they know what they are about. This service is an improvement for us and we look forward to a successful and long-term relationship with them.”
